This seat of the Clan Kerr lies two miles south of Jedburgh in the picturesque Scottish Borders. Oozing charm, steeped in history, grand yet homely, Ferniehirst Castle is a veritable gem. If you are looking for something a little bit different, you may have just stumbled upon it. Affectionately known as ‘Scotland’s frontier fortress’, Ferniehirst Castle is possibly the best-preserved of a distinctive group of highly prestigious mansions erected by wealthy Border lairds during the closing decades of the 16th Century. The 15th-century Castle, set amidst enchanting forests and overlooking the River Jed, offers a unique stay steeped in history and charm, and can accommodate up to eighteen guests across the Castle and adjoining Lothian Wing.
The property:
A well-loved home to the Kerr Family, this is a romantic and historic building whilst also being a warm and cosy place to stay, and very well equipped to cater for all modern-day comforts.
The heart of Ferniehirst Castle is the Grand Hall – the main reception room which has a large ornate fireplace, fine portraits of King James VI and members of the Kerr family on the stone walls. There is a family kitchen with an AGA. In the southeast tower, the Turret Library boasts a beautiful wood-panelled ceiling and a fascinating collection of books and curiosities relating to Borders family histories. The Turret Sitting Room is a wonderful space to relax in, with comfortable sofas and a log burner. The Nursery, once the children’s playroom, is now a welcoming sitting room with kitchen facilities and a small adjacent turret room, offering views over the landscaped grounds and local countryside. In the Lothian Wing there is also an additional kitchen, dining room and sitting room, along with French doors which open out onto a patio and the landscaped gardens beyond.
Bedrooms:
The nine double bedrooms at Ferniehirst Castle are split between the Castle and the adjoining Lothian Wing. Seven of the double beds can be unzipped into two single beds. There are seven bathrooms, two of which are ensuite. From Lady Ralph's Bedroom, which is a spacious retreat with magnificent views of the grounds and courtyard, to the Turret Bedroom which offers a romantic, fairy-tale experience with two separate turret rooms, each of the bedrooms has been tastefully decorated and offer unique charm, with enchanting views out onto the estate.

You will have full unrestricted access to the house and gardens.
The Lothian Wing is on the ground floor.
